Red sea glass is so rare, some beachcombers have never found it.
Fast-forward to the middle of the 20th century, when Anchor Hocking created a limited edition red bottle, known as Royal Ruby, for the Schlitz Brewing Company. Schlitz was the largest brewery in the United States at the time, and had previously used only traditional brown bottles. Although Anchor Hocking replaced the gold with copper oxide in its Schlitz bottles, the glass retained its unmistakable ruby color. Schlitz sold 54,000,000 Royal Ruby beer bottles between 1949 and 1963.
